Random Numbers for BE Seats in TN

From this year onward, although one have studied good and got high percentage, chances of getting the BE Seat he/she wishes hangs on the probability of occurrence of a smaller random number.

The Story

TN Govt had abolished TNPCE Exam for BE seats. Since Entrance exam is ruled out, there is a possibility of two or more students having same score is high. In case of tie, marks in Mathematics, Physics and then a optional subject (Biology or Computer Science), followed by date of birth, favoring the older student are considered to break it.

Will it ever happen?

According to law of large numbers, there is an outside chance of occurrence of tie still. The probability of such an occurrence is rare. Since there will be 50 thousand students eyeing for the seat, chances of two students having same mark is 1 in 15,000. And both of them having same day is 1 in 5,000. This is fairly high because most of the student has the same birth year. So AnnaUniversity is getting ready to avoid such a mishap.

Every applicant will be allotted a random number by computer. On the event of a tie, the random number will be considered. The candidate with the lower random number will get the priority and finally gets the seat.

Uses of Random numbers

Random numbers are useful for a variety of purposes, such as generating data encryption keys, simulating and modeling complex phenomena and for selecting random samples from larger data sets. They have also been used for games and gambling. When discussing single numbers, a random number is one that is drawn from a set of possible values, each of which is equally probable, i.e., a uniform distribution. When discussing a sequence of random numbers, each number drawn must be statistically independent of the others. This is not the first time random numbers are used for seat deciding.

Yet another reason for the student to put the blame on others.

So, one can finally say – life is random or perhaps pseudo random.
